Texas Traffic Laws

Staying up to date on the Texas traffic laws can be a daunting task whether you are a new or experienced driver. This department believes that a better observance of the traffic laws and strict compliance with them will help prevent traffic accidents and ensure a safe driving experience for all. In an effort to better educate the public we will periodically post those laws as they appear in the Texas Transportation Code.

If you have any questions pertaining to these laws, please call your local law enforcement agency.

Sec. 545.156 TC Vehicle Approached by Authorized Emergency Vehicle.

(a)     On the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle using audible

         and visual signals that meet the requirements of Sections 547.305 and 547.702,

         or of a police vehicle lawfully using only an audible signal, an operator, unless

         otherwise directed by a police officer, shall:

         (1)     yield the right-of-way;

         (2)     immediately drive to a position parallel to and as close as possible to the

                  right-hand edge or curb of the roadway clear of any intersection; and

         (3)     stop and remain standing until the authorized emergency vehicle has

                  passed.

(b)     This section does not exempt the operator of an authorized emergecny vehicle

         from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the

         highway.

What does it all mean?

Drivers MUST move to the far right lane (closest to the curb or edge of roadway) which is not in front of an intersection and come to a COMPLETE STOP until the emergency vehicle has passed. This would include yeilding the right of way to emergency vehicles that are on-coming or are approaching from the rear.
